Lesson 1 of 7 · 10 min
Start With One Useful Thing
AI becomes easier when you stop asking, “What can this technology do?” and start with, “What small task would I like help with?”
Good first tasks are easy to review. Drafting a grocery list, shortening a message, explaining a term, or outlining a meeting agenda are better starting points than asking AI to make a major decision for you.
The four-part prompt recipe
You do not need special prompt language. Give AI four useful details:
- Goal: What do you want help producing?
- Context: What should it know about your situation?
- Constraints: What limits, preferences, or rules matter?
- Output: What should the answer look like?
Compare these requests:
Help me plan dinner.
Plan three weeknight dinners for two adults after busy workdays. Keep each meal under 30 minutes and avoid peanuts. Return a table with the meal, preparation time, and one combined shopping list.
The second prompt is not better because it is long. It is better because it removes guesswork.
Treat the first answer as a draft
You can keep the conversation going. Useful follow-ups include:
- “Make the plan simpler.”
- “Give me two alternatives for the second option.”
- “What assumptions did you make?”
- “Show me what I should verify.”
The first response does not need to be perfect. Your follow-up is part of the process.
What stays with you
AI can suggest. You decide whether the suggestion is accurate, appropriate, and worth using. For high-stakes health, legal, financial, employment, or safety decisions, use AI to prepare questions, not to replace a qualified person.
Before the next lesson
Choose one small task you expect to do this week. Use the practice lab below to turn it into a clear request. Then try the same four-part recipe in whichever AI chat tool you already have access to.
Build a prompt that gives AI something to work with
Choose one detail from each row. Watch a vague request become a useful brief.
