Choose the Right Tool and Use It Safely

You do not need to master every AI product. Start with the task, then ask where the information lives and how sensitive it is.

General AI chats

ChatGPT and Claude are general AI assistants. Both can help brainstorm, explain, draft, summarize text you provide, and organize ideas. Their interfaces, plans, settings, and capabilities change over time.

For low-risk personal tasks, use whichever one you can access comfortably. The four-part prompt recipe works in both.

Claude is often comfortable for long-form reading and writing. ChatGPT offers a broad general-purpose experience. These are starting tendencies, not fixed rules. Test the result that matters to you instead of choosing by brand alone.

Copilot where you work

“Copilot” can refer to different Microsoft experiences. A workplace Copilot may be available in tools such as Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, or Excel and may use approved organizational context.

What it can access depends on your employer’s licenses, configuration, permissions, and policies. Being inside a work application does not remove your responsibility to follow those policies.

A simple safety check

Before you paste or upload anything, pause:

1. Is this public, personal, confidential, or regulated information?
2. Has my organization approved this tool for this kind of work?
3. Can I use a fictional or reduced example instead?
4. Who could be affected if the answer is wrong?

Do not put passwords, access keys, private customer data, employee records, protected health information, legal strategy, or confidential company material into an unapproved tool.

Verify in proportion to the risk

A dinner idea needs a quick common-sense check. A customer statement, financial number, policy summary, or health claim needs the original source and, often, qualified review.

Use AI confidence as a writing style, not as evidence.
